According to the history books, Everest was first climbed in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, but it’s possible British mountaineers George Leigh Mallory and Andrew “Sandy” Irvine may have beaten them to it. They were last seen on June 8, 1924 at 28,200 feet—still going strong for the top.
